Announcing the 2008 prizewinners:

The Charles Cardinal Journet Prize

The Journet Prize honors the scholarly monograph published in any language during the past calendar year that best exemplifies the task of drawing upon the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas to engage constructively in contemporary theology, philosophy, and/or biblical studies. The Prize consists of a $500 award and an invitation to deliver the Journet Lecture at Ave Maria University during the Spring of the year, all expenses paid by the Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal. The purpose of the Journet Prize is to stimulate and draw attention to the ongoing renewal, among both Catholic and Protestant thinkers, of contemporary and energetic Thomistic scholarship.

2007 Recipient, Ralph McInerny
2006 Recipient, Michael Sherwin, OP

The Veritas Medal

The Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal annually awards the Veritas Medal to an eminent Catholic thinker whose career reflects the Aquinas Center’s goal to foster the search for truth. Since the attainment of truth is a participation in the Wisdom of Christ, the Veritas Medal serves to recognize those who have instantiated, in their lives and work, the integration of faith and reason.

2008 Recipient, Dr. Janet E. Smith
2007 Recipient, Avery Cardinal Dulles, SJ
2006 Recipient, George Wiegel

Ex Corde Ecclesiae Medal

John Paul II’s vision of the Catholic university was promulgated in his Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990).  There he makes clear the urgent need to teach Catholic truth and values to the next generation of teachers.  The Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal, whose mission includes supporting the Graduate School of Theology at Ave Maria University, was founded for this purpose of teaching the next generation of teachers.  Without teachers grounded in Catholic truth and values, young people at a pivotal time in their lives will not be exposed to the truth and beauty of Jesus Christ.  The Ex Corde Ecclesiae Medal is awarded annually to a person from the South Florida community who has done the most to support the Aquinas Center and the Graduate School in their mission of evangelizing the Catholic academic world.

2008 Recipient, Father Matthew L. Lamb
2007 Recipient, Dr. Thomas M. Loome
2006 Recipient, Carlos Figueroa
